Pahlavan Mahmud Mausoleum is an architectural complex and one of the best works of Khiva architecture of the mid XIX century. It is made in the tradition of Khorezm architecture before Timur time.
Pahlavan Mahmud, who lived in the XIII century, was a local poet from simple craftsmen, also famous for the heroic power of the invincible fighter and the ability to heal people. His grave was located in the cemetery behind the Juma mosque.
The local oral tradition contains a description of many details related to the life and deeds of Pahlavan Mahmud. Since ancient times, he is revered here as a pir, that is, the saint protector of the city.
